Kake-hōrai is an auspicious ornament traditionally displayed during the New Year, derived from the symbolic Mount Hōrai, representing longevity and prosperity.
In Japan, Mount Hōrai has often been associated with Mount Fuji as an image of the sacred and eternal peak.
In Kyoto, it has been crafted as yūsoku zōka (court-style ceremonial artificial flowers) and hung on the central pillar of the house to welcome the deity of the New Year.
Eriko Morita reinterprets this traditional form through mizuhiki knots, reconstructing it in a contemporary design language.
